Top Ten Tips For A Safe Holiday Season

1) Select lights that have been tested by a reputable testing lab (such as UL approved) to be sure they conform to safety standards. Inspect all holiday lights for frayed wiring, broken bulbs and cracked sockets before you hang them.

2) Never connect extension cords together, use a single cord that is long enough to reach the outlet without stretching. Never connect more than 3 strands of lights together.

3) Make sure candles are firmly secured in sturdy, non-combustible holders that will not tip over. Keep away from flammable decorations; especially pine garlands and other dry, natural arrangements.

4) Don't leave lit fireplaces unattended, regardless of the time of year. Don't burn wrapping paper or pine boughs in the fireplace as floating embers can escape the chimney and could ignite your roof or a neighboring roof.

5) Select a tree that is as fresh and green as possible. The needles on a fresh tree will bend instead of breaking and should not fall off easily. Keep them watered and away from heating vents or fireplaces to reduce risk of fire.

6) Keep holiday decorations, electrical cords, lights and plants away from young children and pets as they may be dangerous or poisonous.

7) Don't get distracted; unattended cooking is a leading cause of fire. Your guests won't mind if you are a little busy when they first arrive.

8) Place smoke alarms near or on the ceiling and away from corners in all major rooms of the house. Install carbon monoxide detectors in bedrooms and rooms with wood or gas fired appliances.

9) Turn off all lights before leaving home or going to bed. If a timer is used to turn lights off, make sure it is set correctly and working properly. Be sure that lighting used outside is recommended for outdoor use.

10) Before leaving home for the holiday ask a trusted neighbor to keep and eye on your home. Have them to pick up your newspapers and mail every day so the home doesn't look empty.
