Top Ten Tips to Organize A Home Office

1) Take a deep breath, this is never an easy task so take your time and get it done right once and for all.

2) Start fresh by clearing the entire area, every surface and drawer needs to be emptied. Throw away all the things you do not need. If you think you need it, immediately create a file for it, place it in a bin, or put it on a shelf.

3) Find a desk that works best for you. If you often use reference materials consider a desk with a hutch, need room for a computer and large work surface consider an L-shape.

4) Use organizers or trays for items on your desk. Papers, post-its, pens and the like all need a specific place to reduce clutter.

5) Take all business cards and info on pieces of paper and put them in your computer and sync with your PDA.

6) Cord covers or wraps are a must to keep wires in check. Label each one so it is easy to identify if they need to be unplugged and moved.

7) Create an efficient file system, one drawer for active, and one for inactive or pending projects. Label clearly so each project is easy to find.

8) Set up your office space so all items are within a few feet of each other. Your desk, printer, fax machine and files should all be within arms reach.

9) To reduce visual clutter, use a closet or freestanding unit with doors to store extra supplies. If space is limited consider a printer stand with storage underneath.

10) At the end of each month go thru all shelves drawers and files. Remove any items that are outdated or not useful.
