Top Ten Tips Pet Proof Your Home

1) Keep all human medications out of your pets reach. Cold medicines, pain killers, even one pill that spills on the ground and gets licked can cause serious harm.

2) Flea and tick medications should be carefully administered. Make sure you know your pet's weight and never administer medicine intended for dogs on cats, the results can be devastating.

3) Everyday human food can be toxic for pets. Grapes, raisins, onions, avocado and chocolate in relatively small doses can be toxic to your pet.

4) Keep plants where your best friend can't get to them. Lilies, tulip bulbs and rhododendron are just a few that can cause major organ damage.

5) Rat poisons can be very harmful to a pet and they may not show symptoms for up to two weeks. If you must use it, make sure it is in a place where the pet cannot get to or step on.

6) Bleaches, detergents and disinfectants used on floors can cause skin and respiratory irritation. If you use these products go over the floor with clean water afterwards. A great safe alternative is white vinegar.

7) Paint chips, dust from sanded floors, and poorly-glazed food and water ceramic bowls can cause lead poisoning. If you are doing any construction work find a friend to leave your pet with until you are done.

8) Insecticides and fertilizers are necessary for your lawn but can be poisonous to your best friend. Mulch can cause severe intestinal obstruction. When outdoors keep an eye on what your pet is ingesting.

9) Anti freeze and pool or spa chemicals are inviting to a pet. If your pet is vomiting, twitching or convulsive seek treatment immediately.

10) Lamps, computers, televisions, all have inviting wires that pets may want to chew on. Always keep cords hidden as much as possible and unplug everything in the room where your pet stays when you are away.
