Top Ten Tips To Update Kitchen Cabinets
2) Use an industrial strength cleaner to remove dirt and grime from the cabinet doors. Rinse off the cabinet doors and allow them to dry thoroughly.
3) Sand each door until the shine is gone and the surface is lightly roughed up. This can be done by hand or with an electric sander. Start with a low numbered or coarse sand paper and finish with a high numbered or fine sandpaper. Thoroughly clean off all the dust.
4) Prime and paint the doors, leaving enough time in between coats so each layer is completely dry. Use a glossy paint in even vertical strokes from one end of the door to the other to ensure a smooth uniformed look.
5) Sand, prime and paint the cabinet frames as instructed above. When working indoors open windows for proper ventilation and wear a dust mask for safety. Keep children and pets away from the dust and fumes.
6) Replace the cabinet hardware with brushed nickel or chrome pieces. Door handles and hinges come in a variety of sizes, bring your existing hardware with you when shopping to ensure the screw holes are the same distance apart. For an inexpensive fix refresh your old hardware with a can of nickel spray paint.
7) To antique or age the cabinets use a light sandpaper to take the paint off the edges of the finished cabinets.
8) Cabinet doors with a panel can be updated with washable wallpaper or grass cloth affixed to the inset.
9) For the more advanced do it yourselfer, cut the center panel out of the top cabinet doors and insert a piece of glass before painting.
10) Use a router bit to change the shape of the door edges or to create a groove design on the door before painting.
