Top Ten Tips to Avoid DIY Mistakes

1) Obtain a permit; it's the law. Many people try to get away with doing a project without one, but if you are caught, an inspector has the right to make you tear the entire project out and start again.

2) If this is your first project than you don't know what every DIY'er knows, this will take twice as long to do than you are probably planning. Schedule for drying time, cutting time and installing time. Prepare yourself for the unexpected.

3) Set a realistic budget and stick to it. Expect every project to have about 15% of materials that are wasted due to off cuts. Don't forget to add up all the little items, nails, tape, brushes, tools. Make a list and try to purchase everything at once to keep a lid on the budget.

4) Often times it is less expensive and a lot smarter to have a professional do some of the work, electrical and plumbing especially.

5) If you do tackle the project yourself, remember to turn off the main breaker or the main water source before you start.

6) You have no idea when you tear open a wall what you will find, pest infestation, structural problems, faulty wiring, moisture or mold. Prepare for extra time and budget to take care of these problems.

7) Most projects require more than one person, four hands are better than two. Line up a friend in advance and give them a realistic timeline so you are not left alone halfway thru the project.

8) The right tools are essential to doing the project right with limited hassle. When buying always purchase professional grade tools. If they are out of your budget consider renting them for a day or two.

9) Purchase quality materials; sometimes cheaper is not better. Consider how the cost will outweigh the lifespan of the materials you are using.

10) Take your time thinking the project out. Better to start next week with a full plan than rush into a project to only be frustrated and abandon it.
