Top Ten Tips to Tile A Floor

1) Draw a layout on graph paper to accurately count how many tiles you need, add and extra 10% to that number when ordering in case tiles break or get cut wrong.

2) Make sure your sub-floor is level, if it is not the tile will not only look bad they may crack under pressure. If the floor is uneven you can install cement backerboard.

3) Clean the floor well; dust, oil, wax and grease will prevent the adhesive from working properly.

4) Find the center point of the room and divide the room in 4 quarters. Lay the tiles out in one section on the floor without adhesive first to make sure the layout is even and what you want.

5) When applying the adhesive use a trowel with 'teeth'. This will create grooved lines that will help bind the tile to the floor. Place the tile then give it a little twist back and forth for the adhesive to create a good bond.

6) Work in one section at a time so that the adhesive does not dry out and the project is more manageable. Always start in the center, this ensures the cut tiles on either side of the room are the same size and the room looks symmetrical.

7) Use spacers in between each tile to ensure an equal distance between tiles. This will help to keep your rows straight and even.

8) Consider renting a tile cutter from a local home improvement store. This not only saves time it makes for a less frustrating day. Read all directions for use and always wear protective goggles.

9) Practice makes perfect and good grouting can make the floor look fantastic. Practice with a leftover piece of backerboard and tiles to get the hang of it.

10) Make sure you seal your grout when the job is done. This will prevent the grout from absorbing dirt and grime and will keep it looking new.
