Zen Dining Room

A wall covered with shag carpet and faux brick?! It is not anyone's ideal, especially when it is in the dining room. These homeowners were ready to remove the 70's and bring the room into the new millennium. Zen calm was the desire of this family and with a lot of new drywall and a relaxed palate the family found peace and tranquility.

This room was a design about light and dark. Calming grey/white walls were a must for this style. The original ceiling beams were removed, sanded and stained a dark java color to set the contrasting tone. The floors, in a dark bamboo, also provide the proper contrast to the walls.

In a dining room the table is the focal point of the room. Sleek Asian lines and bench seating is the choice for this space. Placemats made of stones and a trough of orchids keep the palate neutral while providing much needed texture and interest.

For the walls, this room needed living art. Planter boxes with plastic liners and floral foam house tall stalks of bamboo. The windows are covered in a neutral fabric on tension rods and the window bench is covered in a coordinating fabric.

In the corner of the dining room, next to the side entrance of the home was the perfect place to tuck in a desk. With a large chalk/cork board above it the family can now keep track of events as well as calls and has a place for the children to use the computer. The best part, it is tucked away so when you are at the table it is hidden behind the wall.

A striped green rug, tiger wood shelves and desk and the families treasured glass and dinnerware make this room a retreat as well as gathering place.
