Rustic and Modern
As the saying goes, buy the worst house on a great block and you will get the most value out of it. That is exactly what these homeowners did, but found it to be more work than they could handle on their own. Having a large living and dining space is a bonus but the trick is to keep the open feel while defining each area. The fireplace was the selling point for these homeowners so this room had to reflect the rustic yet modern charm of it.
Once the double shutter doors were removed and replaced by a standard door, the back wall was ready for a big change. A deep orange/red paint color was chosen as the backdrop for a dramatic staggered wood wall. Two identical floating credenzas help to unify the space as well as define the two areas.
For this multi purpose room, the use of area rugs define the two functional spaces. The use of the bright orange/red not only focuses the sitting and dining area, it coordinates with the striking focal wall.
With such dramatic colors as accents the rest of the color palate remained neutral. A soothing cream colored paint for the walls and large neutral tiles for the floor. The tile keeps the space open and helps to maintain the flow of the room.
With budget a concern, most of the furniture was reused. The original wood and iron dining table was revamped using a painted marble technique, the marble and the iron legs are also seen in the new round coffee table. The sitting area was pulled away from the wall and centered in the living space for a more intimate feel and to bring it closer to the fireplace as well as the new tv wall.
Beautiful neutral curtains with an orange/red fern pattern, two contemporary floor lamps and a simple repair and paint job on the fireplace screen completes this rustic and modern redo.
