Romantic Bedroom Renovation

With two small children and limited time, these homeowners devoted all of their time redesigning the downstairs. When they finally got around to their master bedroom they had run out of ideas, as well as steam. The space was bland and uninspiring with white paint on the walls, poor furniture placement and a feeling of being closed in. The solution, a burst of color, the right layout and an eyepopping vaulted ceiling.

The homeowners had some beautiful pieces of antique furniture that they wanted to keep, but there was a desire for the room to also have a modern feel. This was the inspiration for the eclectic- romantic mix. This room has three windows that flood the room with light; that along with a new high ceiling called for a deep rich color. A dark mauve wall plays well with the new vaulted ceiling in a crisp white.

The original placement of the bed was wrong for this space. The two windows on the long wall act as a perfect frame for the bed. By coordinating the curtains to the headboard, the wall has symmetry and a connection that was lacking before. The fabric for the headboard and the curtains are in a neutral color that has lots of texture to add interest. Making this simple headboard was easy, using plywood, foam, batting, fabric and a staple gun. It is a great way of custom designing a space without spending a lot of money.

The artwork above the bed is a departure from a standard framed picture. Using a beautiful piece of fabric, decoupage and plywood this piece takes on a unique texture with free formed edges . This project has more interest and texture with every layer of shellac, the more layers the more shine. Three smaller pieces on the opposite wall adds symmetry to the space. Scrollwork on the furniture is repeated in the rug runner, artwork, vanity chair and table lamps.

Some leafy green plants, crystal candlesticks and simple glass jars complete this romantic eclectic oasis.
