Recipe for a Great Kitchen
This charming early 1900’s home was the victim of a 70’s redo and was in great need of some help. The 10’ X 12’ kitchen was small, outdated and non functional and it was time to give it a makeover that combined the best of classic and modern design.
A black and white color scheme with bursts of red is as popular today as it was when the home was built. A classic portrait style cabinet in white with a glass corner door visually keeps the small kitchen open. Concrete is a great modern choice for countertops. This product can be made in any color and can be molded to any shape. The thick, solid countertops in black compliment the more delicate cabinet doors.
The floor is a classic black and white octagon and dot pattern. This tile pattern was the most popular cut geometric style of its time and is seeing a rise in popularity today. Using this smaller tile pattern helps to visually enlarge the size of a small room.
Tin ceilings were also very popular in the early 1900’s. Using a stainless steel version of a classic design, and as a twist using it on the backsplash, helps to blend traditional and modern. Smaller versions of appliances, such as the stove and dishwasher, as well as the under mount sink and modern faucet, all in stainless steel, continue this updated version of a classic design.
As with all design space planning is key, this is especially true when designing a kitchen. Your stove, sink and refrigerator have to be within a 13’ triangle for the most efficient use of space. Also remember, as with any room in your home, the body needs 3’ of unobstructed walking space to move around the room. This kitchen was small but there was enough room to put an island in it. A 24’ x 15” island does not sound like much, but it created added storage and counter space without cluttering or closing off the room.
Adding down lights in the fireplace and creating a wine rack for the space set the tone for the accents in the room. A wine poster over the fireplace, grape tiffany style light fixture and grape patterned curtains draws your eye around the room.
