From the looks of this bachelor pad, you would never know a successful lawyer lived in this space. The home had mismatched furniture, and a paint job that did nothing to highlight the beautiful details already there. The owners desire was to make his home a retreat with New England flair.
Using paint in a light cream for the walls and java brown for the trim, highlighted the beautiful woodwork in the home. The staircase with its three piece baluster is now a standout in the room. The staircase design is the inspiration for the custom designed heater covers, and archway dividing the living and dining space. The lines are repeated in the drapes, china hutch and ceiling fixture.
The red fireplace wall is clad in faux stone to give the room a warm rustic feel. The ceiling beams and built in wall unit highlight the dark and light colors and makes the space intimate without it feeling cramped or dark.
The furniture is a play on the light and dark of the walls as well. The living room is furnished with all light pieces while the dining room has all dark woods. The rugs and the curtains in both rooms are the same to give the two spaces a cohesive feel. Red accents are also found in both rooms to tie the two together. In the living room, the sofa and chair are pulled away from the staircase to define the sitting area, giving ample walk space behind the sofa to access the stairs.
Wooden placemats, a branch sculpture for the bookcase, and a soft candle glow complete the look of this urban twist on a New England retreat.
