Multipurpose Basement
Asbestos floor tiles, deteriorating ceiling tiles and a bar and bookshelves no one wanted to use didn't make for a basement that anyone wanted to live in. The homeowners modest two bedroom home was in need of more space and the basement was the perfect place to create and a multi functioning room. The basement went from unusable to an office, workout, and sitting room using most of the homeowners furniture and some much needed updates.
The all wood paneling on the walls were in good shape and just in need of a new paint job. A light taupe color brightens up the space without making it too vibrant. The carpet in a deeper taupe was the perfect paring to the wall color. To divide the workout area a dark grey mat was integrated into the new carpet so the floor becomes seamless.
Division of this large space was the challenge. By creating room dividers that were partially see-thru, each space is sectioned off without being closed off. Alternating black and white stained pieces of wood creates a dramatic piece with little effort. Using a flat and round divider gives visual interest to the room. Three simple bookshelves with panels dividing them all trimmed in cherry wood creates a dramatic focal wall that is beautiful and functional. The homeowner has a place to work and store all of his business papers. The second bedroom upstairs is now reclaimed thanks to this new workstation in the basement.
The ceiling also got a much needed makeover using new ceiling tiles. The heat for the basement comes from the ceiling and there needed to be a way to create venting without compromising the style. The design of the tiles is in a circular pattern, using a circular drill bit the size of the circles allows the heat to pass thru without a problem.
The repainted entertainment center was mounted on the wall so the homeowner now has the tv at eye level while working out. The trunk was also repainted to give all the gym equipment a fresh place to be stored. The sofa, which was in excellent shape, is given an update with a neutral throw and circular patterned pillows that reflect the design of the ceiling and room divider.
New wall art, candles that match the bookcase panels and treasured family pictures complete this multipurpose basement.
