A Modern Lounge
Big, bland and boring, that was the thought when you walked into this room. It has a double height ceiling and lots of space, but was overshadowed by the stark white walls, non descript furniture and 80's mauve colored rug. These homeowners wanted a room that was modern/futuristic, the challenge was to interpret that in a way that still paid tribute to the style of this suburban home.
The new color is a bold one, deep burgundy is not the right choice for every room but when you have so much space and light streaming in from every direction it works beautifully. This makes a huge statement in the room and is perfectly balanced by the beige fireplace, cream colored rug and enormous cream colored sofa.
The fireplace was small in stature for such a big room and was overshadowed by the French doors on either side. Beige marble tiles were chosen and set to the height of the doors making this wall a standout. In keeping with the futuristic desires of the homeowners there is no mantle, giving this wall a sleek look.
The spindles on the railings were removed and replaced with a sleek metal design. This was an expensive choice, but was essential in changing the entire look of the room. 5 pendant lights set in various heights give a glow to the room while drawing your eye to how high the ceilings are. They are all set at a level to be seen in the lounge as well as the second floor.
Floating the large L shaped sofa in the middle of the room was key in the design. With the fireplace and the TV being two different focal points, the L shape brings the two into balance. The walkway for the room is now behind the sofa so there is a clear view of the two focal points.
Silver leaf shelves, mirrored sculptures on the walls, and a double glass coffee table give the room the modern/futuristic look the homeowners wanted, in a smart sophisticated way.
