Kicking Up A Kitchen
When a kitchen, dining area and office space takes up more than half of the homes living area, it has to do more than just function. The outdated kitchen was all but falling apart with a poor lay out and not enough counter space. The dining area was plain and uninviting and the catch all/office space was just cluttered. These three important living areas needed to be revamped and reinvigorated.
Once the kitchen was gutted it was time to do a redesign on the layout. By moving the refrigerator to another wall and taking away the broken stovetop there was plenty of reclaimed counter space. The sleek shaker style cabinets in honey maple create a warm and contemporary look. Simple handles in chrome give the cabinets a finished look. The glass tiles in a camouflage pattern brings in all of the colors the homeowners love and ties all of the design elements together.
The catch all room is restored to its original purpose as a dining area. The dark Pergo floor defines the dining area, and with a simple coat of silver spray paint the chandelier is refreshed. Budget is always a concern, so the homeowners dining table, chairs and breakfront are refreshed and reused. The simple use of the flooring, green walls, architectural details and the homeowners furniture created an uncluttered inviting space to relax and enjoy a meal.
The former eating area is converted into a sunny work area that doubles as a pantry. Taking the office from the catchall room and placing it in front of the window floods it with natural light and allows for much needed breathing room. Two pantry cabinets placed side to side creates ample storage for items that are only used a few times a year.
The olive green paint color is a great compliment to the entire space. When you have multiple rooms open to each other it is a good idea to make them all the same to give the space a cohesive feel. The color works in each room with the cabinets, desk and floor. Even the existing kitchen floor tile looks as good as new against the new paint color.
Stainless appliances, the families favorite dishware, and a coordinating fabric in yellow and green, make this space warm and inviting.
