When designing a room take the rest of the home into account. There is nothing wrong with a classic colonial design, but this 26 year old bedroom decor was in great need of a refresher and it was time to blend it with the rest of the home's style. A Bali inspired bedroom is not for everyone but a quick tour thru this couple's home showed a love for Moroccan and Mediterranean style, this design was just what the house needed.

Space planning is one of the most important things when designing a room, by recessing the TV into the wall and removing the large Armoire, enough room was created to replace the Queen size bed with a King size bed. The low platform design, stained to look like Teak wood, enhances the Balinese style of the room. The Alabaster sconces built into the headboard gives much needed reading light without taking up space on the built-in bedside tables.

In design it is all about contrast, a strong orange-red wall color was chosen to contrast the gold leaf and stone tile on the focal wall. With the neutral colored rug, comforter, curtains and the opaque glass sliding doors, this bold color gives the room a sense of balance.

The simple pattern on the sliding doors is a great design trick. Without the double horizontal lines each door looked separate and drew your eye vertically. By adding the mullions your eye is drawn around the room unifying the space while making it appear larger.

In Balinese design, the curtains to have a natural billowy feel to them but this is a bedroom and a heavier material was needed for privacy. By making the curtains window length and simply gathering them at the bottom it created a breezy effect while still being functional.

The plants and organic materials in the rug, mattress and comforter, along with the Teak woodcarving and lanterns complete the look, giving the room a natural island feel.
