The Great Cover Up
This young family's rec room serves many purposes, TV room, playroom for the kids and party room for dancing and spinning records. The homeowners wanted a modern updated space that they could enjoy with their children during the day and their friends at night. With a large record collection and a need for a dance floor, this design called out for a hip contemporary look that was all about contrast.
Carpet tiles were the perfect choice for this space. This durable product was easy to install around an 8' dance floor. The tan color provides a great contrast to the dark dance floor and mirrors the stain colors on the record wall and turntable. The tan color is also represented in the sleek roman shades.
The use of light and dark stain on the record wall and turntable needed a punch of color to accentuate it. A fresh light blue provides visual interest while highlighting the built-ins and gives it a modern feel. A crisp white paint for the molding is the perfect compliment to the blue walls.
The fireplace was country casual, in another home it would be a feature, but in this room it seemed like an obstacle. By resurfacing the façade in concrete it took on a sleek modern look. The lightest tint of color was used to make sure the fireplace was not a stark white.
The sofa, in a family friendly fabric, and the whimsical puzzle pieces provide versatile seating and can easily be removed when the party gets started. The square shapes of the three nesting tables mirrors the shape of record albums. The metal legs coordinate with the metal on the bar stools and the metal shelves that hold the glassware high enough away from the children's reach. The shelves for the cocktail glasses are simple galvanized pipes, knuckles and flanges affixed to the wall and covered with a piece of tempered glass. It provides and urban modern twist in the room.
The homeowner's photography, modern lamps with shelves and coordinating dark storage pieces takes a room of contrast and makes it cohesive.
