Farmhouse Restoration
This 1800's farmhouse had a hidden treasure that was just waiting to be uncovered. The homeowners were not strangers to renovations having worked on other rooms in their home, as well as owning a furniture restoration shop. They wanted to take their old and dated room and refresh it with a modern twist that did not take away from the original charm of the house.
Finding stone walls in other parts of the home, the owners suspected they would find the same in the living room. Using a jackhammer, the plaster easily comes off the wall. A smaller hand held is used to do the more precise work close to the stone and mortar. After removing the plaster from the stone a simple brushing preps the wall for a clear sealant. The blue wall color enhances the color of the stone. When you have stone in a room, use the colors in the stone as your palate. In this case there was blue, brown, grey and green.
Working with a furniture restorer is a great way of getting interesting pieces in a variety of finishes. The gears on the wall were just sitting on a high shelf collecting dust. With a little work they become a unique, beautiful focal point. The Adirondack chair, rocker, chess table and entertainment piece were all stripped and refinished to highlight the colors of the wood. The travel chessboard and all of the playing pieces were restored and 2 storage boxes were built to act as a base to create a unique coffee table. It is the mixture of all of these restored pieces, the homeowner already had, that gives this farmhouse the warm lived in feeling.
A modern sofa in a textured blue/brown fabric gives the room a more modern feel while still blending with the other pieces in the room. Using that and combining it with the modern ceiling gives this room a freshness that it was lacking.
Cushions in a simple cream fabric, curtains in a plain brown fabric and a muted green and brown stripped rug adds warmth to the room without distraction.
