Décor Inspired By Africa
This master bedroom was far from masterful. With a dull grey carpet, bland wall color and uninspiring bedding this room said nothing of the homeowner's roots or personality. This couple hails from South Africa and wanted to use some pieces they brought to America to set the tone for the room.
The orange, brown and white bedding from South Africa was the inspiration for the color scheme of the room. To complement it a warm green paint with yellow and brown tones was used. This color was strong enough to blend with the orange without competing with it.
The carpet was removed and in its place African Rosewood was added. This deep rich colored wood adds elegance to this once nondescript space. The closet and bedroom doors were taken down and gel stained to blend with the cherry wood trim that now runs around the room.
The woven accent wall and headboard create a wow factor in the room. This bold piece was simply created with dowels and strips of wood. To create balance in the room, the opposite walls have two 3 dimensional wooden bands wrapping around them.
The original bench, dresser and night tables were handmade in South Africa. They were refinished by first sanding them down, then staining them a dark brown. To create contrast the recessed part to the drawers that create the handles were taped off and finished with a clear coat.
A rug runner incorporating all the room colors, coordinating striped curtains and matching bench tops and South African art pieces complete the look of this completely transformed room.
