When you buy a new home in need of major updating it gives you the opportunity to really put your stamp on the space. This homeowner wanted to evoke a cottage style in her home and the kitchen was just not cutting it. Everything but the tile floor was removed for this transformation that wanted a throwback in time while keeping all modern amenities.

Antique evergreen cabinets, in a classic portrait style, set the tone for this kitchen makeover. It is a great departure from the safe choice of white cabinets that people think of when they think cottage style. The top cabinets have glass fronts to open up the space and give it a contemporary twist. Cup pulls and knobs in brushed nickel give the cabinets an authentic look and coordinate with all the new stainless steel appliances.

Countertops are always a big decision and in this space there are a lot of them, the use of two different types gives the room more interest. Classic butcher block is used on the counters while white granite is used on the island. When designing a space if you think you have too much of something you are probably right. Keep yourself open to different choices of color, tiles and countertops.

The backsplash is in a classic white subway tile in a matte finish. To go with a glossy finish would have been too reflective and too modern in this space. The farmer's sink is a classic touch in the cottage style. The contemporary twist is the separate entertainment area with bar sink, beverage fridge, and racks for wine and glasses.

To replace the old radiators with something smaller would have been too expensive, to keep them the way they were would have been an eyesore. Simple wooden frames with vintage style screens totally transform the look of them. The windows above get plantation shutters, and along with the covers are painted a crisp white that works beautifully with the pale yellow on the walls and the antique evergreen on the cabinets.

A place to display vintage china, modern lighting with a classic touch and accessories in tones of green and yellow finish this classic cottage kitchen.
