Convertible Playroom/Guestroom
What a find! On the second floor tucked behind a bedroom closet was a hidden room. Maybe it was hidden because of the way it looked, but that was about to change. This space was the perfect opportunity for the homeowners to give their daughters their own playroom while also creating a guestroom. This space needed everything and that is just what it got.
First the low ceiling was removed exposing the beams, this gave the room some much needed height and recessed lighting provided a functional and dramatic change. The entire ceiling was painted white to accent the slope of the room. A soft light green was added to the walls for a fresh look. The color palate of green, yellow and brown, is a child and adult friendly color scheme.
The owners work from home and needed the playroom floor to not only be durable but to also provide soundproofing for the office below. Cork was the perfect choice for the floor. It is durable while being soft and it dulls the sound. There are so many different styles of cork, for this room a beautiful grain was picked that provided a soft swirl instead of pronounced chunks of cork in each plank. This is a click-lock floor that was easy to install and is easy to maintain.
The art wall is a perfect example of form and function. The girls are avid drawers and they needed a place to display their work and be able to change it whenever they felt like it. Simple clips held up by small nails gives the girls the freedom to create whatever gallery they want. This also being a guestroom, it needed to be displayed in an orderly way. By creating a simple lattice and painting it white it gives order to what could be chaos.
A trundle bed is placed on one side of the room providing a sitting area by day and a sleeping area by night. On the opposite end of the room a hinged desk is installed for the girls to do their art projects and a large storage box provides a place to hide away the clutter and another place to sit. The center of the room becomes the main sitting area with two butterfly chairs a yellow shag rug and soft plaid curtains with butterfly tiebacks.
Butterflies are a passion of the girls as they are avid bug collectors. The 4 butterflies on the art wall hide a little secret. One of the butterflies conceals a hidden door, providing access from one of the girl's rooms that did not exist before. Now both have personal access to the room.
Fun floating lanterns, fresh yellow flowers and a large family of stuffed animals makes this room inviting and fun.
