Bright Family Basement
This basement was the space they wanted to ignore but couldn't. This was a large space with a lot of potential but the homeowners didn't know where to begin. They wanted a place to watch tv, an office space, and a child's play area. This project was about defining space and making it livable.
The paneling on the bottom half of the wall had to go, as well as the carpet and outdated ceiling tile. The poles in the middle of the room were an eyesore but held up the structure of the home. Adding knee walls on either side of the poles created a natural division for an office space. Leaded glass panels over each knee wall helped to create a beautiful visual division of space.
The floor was refreshed with a laminate wood product in an olive color. This is a great product alternative for a basement floor, it is mold and mildew resistant, looks like natural hardwood floor and is a slim profile to not take up height in a room with a low ceiling.
The walls were given a fresh coat of yellow paint, this inviting color works well for all three areas the homeowners wanted. The ceiling was replaced with white metal tiles, the simple pattern adds interest without calling too much attention to itself. The white works perfectly with the wall color.
The sitting area is defined by the area rug, and the play area is defined by the toy-storage bench. It is this minimal approach that creates visual areas without closing off the room.
A big comfy sofa, plush stuffed animals and simple room accents complete the inviting warm feeling the homeowners were looking for.
