Boring To Beautiful
This family of four needed to update their space and make it functional. With a hard to access cupboard under the stairs, a fireplace that needed a facelift and sofas that needed to retire to a plaid farm, it was time to put a modern twist on a common style. This large square living room had a lot of potential and just needed a good overhaul to bring it up to date and showcase the homeowners laid back, by the beach, persona.
The outdated furniture was in good shape and was happily donated to a local charity. A 9' sofa with chaise in a dark brown fabric created the perfect amount of seating for nights by the fire or watching tv. The cream color chairs create a perfect balance to the sofa in scale and color contrast, while the low modern coffee table, with warm wood grain and chrome legs, serves as a great accent in the room without looking too bulky or heavy. The contemporary rug with its geometric pattern defines the seating area.
Having a fireplace is great, but the brick seemed out of place in this beach community home. Cladding it in a stone veneer adds a warmth and coziness to the space. The earth tones used in the fireplace are used throughout the room.
The cupboard under the stairs was a storage place for the boy's toys, but the boys had to move the loveseat every time they wanted to get to it. By removing the closet and adding a custom shelving unit, the room has added charm and interest as well as a place to display decorative items and coordinated storage boxes for smaller toys.
The 12' window was not being showcased to it's full potential. A 9' custom made window bench provides more than enough space for the boys to put all of their toys and still have room for more.
A warm tan color for the walls keeps the room light and airy while adding warmth to the space. The custom drapery panels, window seat cushion and pillows in coordinating tans and browns are varied by their texture. For a splash of color, orange shadow boxes that house large sea fans add a modern twist to a beach accessory.
Glass candle holders with sand, an eco-friendly wood floor sculpture and large seashells complete this modern twist on a beach motif.
