A Bath's More Natural Nature

There was not much to love about this bathroom. Blue floral wallpaper, falling apart vanity, passing thru saloon doors to get to the toilet and narrow shower, and let's not forget the carpet throughout the entire space. This couple had a love for all things in the Arts & Crafts craftsman era. So it all had to come out if we wanted to bring the outside in.

Once the carpet was removed, porcelain tile with the look of slate in Brazilian Green and Egyptian Beige was chosen. There was a lot of tile used in this bathroom so a variety of sizes were chosen to create interest. After removing the wallpaper, a Venetian plaster technique was applied to the walls. This created texture while covering up any imperfections left behind by the wallpaper removal. A light earth tone was chosen to enhance the natural feel of the bathroom.

The double sink vanity and medicine cabinet hutch were custom made for this space. The style, color and hardware are all true to the Arts and Crafts movement. Quartz countertops in a deep grey is a beautiful earthy yet modern addition to the vanity top, the look is carried over to the tub surround and adorns the top of the shower bench.

Taking down the wall separating the toilet from the rest of the room and repositioning the door to the shower opened up the space so one could appreciate just how large the room is. This shower repositioning made it possible to have showerheads on either wall with a bench in the middle. Three wall niches provide much needed space for shampoos, gels and soaps.

The new sinks, toilet and whirlpool tub are all in white for a clean crisp look. The faucets and handles are all in brushed nickel, giving the room a modern touch in a muted tone. The ample lighting, set with dimmers, is in the classic Arts and Crafts style. The original wood trim is recycled, by sanding and then staining it in the same color as the vanity and hutch. The project, which cost nothing, ties an original feature that runs throughout the house to the new bathroom.

Towels in browns and tans, a photo collection of a rock wall on the property and an abundance of bath and shower accessories make this bathroom an inviting showpiece.
