A Bangin' Basement

Oh the basement, why do we neglect it so? This sad space was in much need of a redo but with so many things to change it was an overwhelming task. This couple wanted a hip, modern, relaxing space to unwind after a night playing in their band. The challenge was to turn this room from a don't into an 'I Do'.

The basement had to function as a lounge as well as two separate work areas. Once the bar was removed the back section was devoted to the drum set and mixing equipment. The back wall was transformed with a unique slatted wood design with accent lighting behind it. Sliding wood panels with a similar slatted design allow the space to be closed off for privacy. An efficient office area by the stairs functions as the business center for the band.

The carpet and tile were removed and a light maple engineered floor was chosen for the entire space. This mold resistant product is functional and beautiful in this below ground room. Above it, the ceiling is replaced with modern soundproof tiles in a classic paneled style. This simple clean, classic design takes this space from a basement to a finished room.

A simple fix for all the outdated brick was to drywall over top. A neutral color paint freshens and updates the space. Two different shades of cream were used here to give the room a subtle contrast. A wood shelf that runs along the wall divides the paint colors.

The brick pillar in the center of the room is the support for the upper floors, but it was in need of a cover up. A plywood façade is enhanced with wood wrapping around it to create a sculptural focal point in the room and adds a modern touch where once there was an eye sore.

Treasured pictures hung gallery style, furniture in tans, cream and brown and an area rug with all the neutral tones are only part of the story. On the final day a marriage proposal from Danny to Courtney not only completed this basement, it insured their happiness for many years to come.
