Aussie Influenced Living Room
This charming home was hidden behind bland colors and over sized furniture. The neutral wall color did nothing to add charm or contrast and the furniture was so large it cut into the walk space from one room to the other. The divider between the living and dining space did nothing to enhance this little gem. This home was in great need of a modern update. The challenge; color, scale, and architectural details.
The biggest obstacle in the room was the arched room divider. It provided no interest and made the two spaces feel cramped. A new divider, with an open design creates light and flow from one room to the next. Shelves on both sides of the divider provide much needed space for family treasures of this young family.
The rooms color did nothing to enhance the place, a bright green wall color mixed with the Aboriginal inspired fabric on the windows, ottomans and pillows give the room life and interest. A white paint for the moldings and bookcase gives the room a fresh, crisp look. The colors were inspired by the Aboriginal pieces the homeowner owns, the green and orange color combination is seen on the boomerang as well as the didgeridoo. By creating custom frames for these pieces, personal items become focal points.
In such a small space the flow of the floor is very important, using the kitchen floor as an example, blonde hardwood floors now tie the entire first floor together. To further enhance the flow, appropriate sized furniture replaces the enormous sofa, creating twice as much open space. The layout of the dining area was perfect and the furniture was the right size and style for the room. When you can work existing pieces of furniture into a new design it not only helps the budget, it is one less thing to worry about.
A sleek media cabinet, modern floor lamp and low coffee table completes this modern redo.
